Technology and Tools in Engineering Education Research and Innovations
Education and Technology are two of the most important fields in any modern society because end-products and
smart systems advance the quality of life and the welfare of people. Thus, providing quality education to the next generation will enable employability and contribution to the nation’s development. This book will serve as a forum for the sharing existing and innovative practices in engineering education.
The book explores the innovative and research methods of teaching–learning process. The book focuses on the use of technology in the field of education. Technology can reduce the tremendous effort given by students to gather some printed book and journals for acquiring knowledge and increase students’ focus on more important knowledge-gathering process. Equally important, technology can represent education in ways that help students understand latest concepts and ideas.
The Education Technology also enables teachers to integrate project-based learning. With guidance from active teachers, students at different levels can use these tools to construct knowledge and develop skills required in modern society such as presentation skills and analytical skills. In the present time, the teacher’s role in teaching is that of a facilitator. The teacher has to facilitate the learning by providing students with access to technology. The teachers can find the means to engage students more quickly in learning and to cater to the various needs of different students.
The book also focuses on providing opportunities for sharing and learning about innovative and best practices followed in the field of engineering education for enhancing the teaching–learning process. The book can provide a platform to academicians and educationalists to share out of the box ideas and best practices followed in teaching–learning process. In this book, participants can evolve new ideas, techniques, technologies in teaching methodologies, classroom tools and techniques, evaluation and assessment techniques and address the challenges to keep the millennial generation engaged in the teaching–learning process.
Virtual laboratory is an alternative tool for physical experimental setup for conducting simulated experiments across various domains of Science, Technology, and Engineering (STE). The experiment is set up on a virtual platform, i.e. server and/or a website for users to access through the internet at any time and any place of the learner’s convenience. It is a software for interactive learning based on simulations of real phenomena and consists of simulation programs, experimental units called
objects that encompass data files, tools that operate on these objects and produce the intended results.
A virtual experimentation platform fabricated for distribution across the globe with the designed specification is no longer an impossible frontier to be conquered. It is the role of instructors to reflect on how to make the best use of this emerging technology in teaching–learning process. This application of computer technology in the classroom environment has a significant role in enhancing the process. For instance, the use of artificial educational environments such as simulations in teaching and learning is increasingly becoming widespread.
The virtual experimentation enhances students’ skills in problem-solving, critical thinking, creativity, conceptual understanding, and their attitude in terms of motivation, interest, perception, and learning outcomes. These virtual laboratories allow the learner to “tinker” with laboratory equipment in the virtual space that behaves in almost the same way as it would in a real environment. The user performs a series of operations mimicking the actions in a physical laboratory procedure. These operations would yield authentic results and help in learning basic and advanced concepts through remote experimentation .
