this book is intended to demystify the practice so it won’t read like a college-level physics book. After you’ve read it, you’ll be able to do all of the above and so much more! To make the material easy to follow and learn, I’ve written the book so that each chapter provides you the knowledge needed to comprehend the following chapter. In addition, I’ve provided as many pictures and diagrams as I could, so that you can visualize my explanations. Finally, I’veprovided several step-by-step examples that you can do in your garage so that you can practice what you see in these pages.
Here’s a quick run down of my qualifications for writing a book of this nature. As of this writing, I’m 38 years old and have been a car guy since as long as I can remember. Early on, my talents leaned toward automotive electronics— stereo systems, auto security, etc. I began installing car stereo systems in my parent’s driveway at the age of 14, and by the time I graduated high school I was known as the “car stereo guy.” Early on in my career, I spent seven years installing automotive electronics of all kinds to earn a living. Many years later, I’m still involved with the car stereo industry. During my 20 years in the profession, I’ve been fortunate enough to work for two different manufacturers —Clifford Electronics and Rockford Fosgate. And lastly, I’m a hot rodder!
Before beginning, I should note that this book makes the assumption that the vehicle you own has a 12-volt negative ground charging system. That is, the vehicle is equipped with a 12-volt battery and its negative terminal is connected to the vehicle chassis. If you own a vehicle with a 6-volt or even a positive ground charging system, the theory still applies but the specifics do not.
The objective of this chapter is to provide a foundation for the rest of the book. Everything you need to know is explained so that you have a firm understanding of basic automotive electronics. Every other chapter in this book is written on the assumption that you’ve read and understand this one.
